Holborn Europa Raffinerie awards EPC project for Biofuels Complex in Hamburg

Hamburg, Germany, 04 July 2024. Holborn Europa Raffinerie GmbH, an Oilinvest subsidiary, granted Kinetics Technology (KT) an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to build a Biofuels Facility at the Holborn refinery. Multiple other contractors will also be involved in the delivery of the Biofuels Facility project.

Oilinvest is leveraging KT’s expertise in refining and NEXTCHEM’s innovations in sustainable technologies solutions to ensure the Biofuels Facility meets efficiency and sustainability standards.

Valued at €475 million, the Biofuels Facility will commence operations in 2027 to produce Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO), known as green diesel, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using waste and residue materials as well as low carbon hydrogen.

The Facility will be constructed within the existing refinery’s infrastructure with an estimated annual output capacity of 220,000 tons of HVO and SAF, which can respectively act as drop-in for fossil diesel and fossil jet fuel. The Biofuels Facility will help reduce the refinery’s carbon footprint in compliance with the sustainability criteria outlined in the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), reflecting Oilinvest’s strategy towards responsible and sustainable energy solutions.

Ahmed Elkerrami, Oilinvest CEO, stated: “As we navigate through the energy transition, we have committed to generating 30% of our EBITDA from renewable energy sources by 2030. Hence we prioritize investments such as this project aiming towards a cleaner energy landscape.”

This strategic project demonstrates Oilinvest’s commitment to making an impact on the energy transition, creating value for stakeholders and shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for all
